Gustavo A. (Gus) Narvaez, PhD

Gustavo A. (Gus) Narvaez assists the Electrical & Computer Technologies Practice in patent prosecution. With a doctorate in physics and postdoctoral research experience in the electronic and optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots and metal nanoparticles, Gus brings nearly 20 years of experience in all aspects of patent procurement.
Gus prepares and prosecutes patent applications directed to classical and quantum-mechanical computer-related technologies, including quantum computing, quantum networking, digital healthcare, wireless telecommunications, cable networks, and automation control. His work also covers semiconductor processing and packaging technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), mechanical and electromechanical technologies, and designs.
Gus conducts inventor disclosure interviews, develops claim strategy, prepares formal drawings, and drafts original specifications. He has experience developing prosecution strategies for foreign jurisdictions including Europe, China, Japan, Israel, India, and Australia, reviewing proposals from foreign counsel and drafting instructions for prosecuting applications abroad on behalf of clients. Gus also advises businesses on portfolio development and filing strategy, performs patentability analyses, and facilitates forward patenting sessions with engineers and scientists.
Prior to joining Wolf Greenfield, Gus was a senior patent agent at an international law firm, and previously held patent agent and senior patent agent roles at several other firms. He also founded and ran his own patent consulting practice, where he provided preparation and prosecution services, art searches, and patentability and invalidity studies for domestic and international applications.
Before entering the patent field, Gus spent more than a decade conducting research in solid state physics at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory), Ohio State University, Simon Fraser University, the Institute for Microstructural Sciences of the National Research Council of Canada, the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and a thin-film coatings company. He has authored more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has served as an ad hoc referee for Physical Review B and Physical Review Letters.
Gus has devoted more than 100 hours to pro bono patent prosecution, work for which he received a Patent Pro Bono Certificate from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
